My personal view is that politicians themselves exploit the fear of different ethnic and social groups, as a means to effect social control.
My country Australia used to be famed and feted for its tolerance and multiculturalism. But nowadays we have politicians saying things like "Sudanese groups don't adapt to Australian society" or "we'll decide who comes here". Did any westerner really fear or hate Islamic people before the so-called "War on Terror"?
But, wherever people meet each other with goodwill in a personal way, I believe fear evaporates.
I've been very moved by the efforts of Muslim women in Australian towns and cities, who have organised meet-and-greet days with Anglo Australians, with great success.
I was also very moved to see the Israeli band 'Sheva' in concert a couple of years ago. They have Jewish, Palestinian and Muslim band members, all working together in harmony and loving it. In one particular song they alternated the words between "Salaam" and "Shalom".
Peace (Shalom, Salaam) is in our hands; in the politicians' hands is war, fear and trembling. We (the people) need to stop believing the fear-rhetoric and just act from our hearts.
