First off it depends on whether or not it is electronically controlled. If it is, then it already adjusts itself as needed. If it's older, it could help slightly but not enough to make a huge difference. Probably not worth the risk of it running even worse. Better off to make sure the air filter is fresh and the plugs are gapped and in good shape. Run some fuel system cleaner in the tank now and then if it's injected, or clean the car if it needs it. Of course make sure tires are correctly inflated.
