The Secretariat functions as the administrative heart of the UN system. Headed by the Secretary-General, who is elected by the General Assembly to a five-year term, the secretariat carries out decisions of the Security Council, the General Assembly and other UN agencies, but plays no role in policy making. A major duty of the Secretary-General is to alert the Security Council to any situation considered a threat to world peace. The Secretary-General also attempts to end international disputes and provide administrative support for peacekeeping operations.
