    On this day in 1981, American President Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest, his Press Secretary in the head and a secret service agent in the side by 'Taxi-Driver' obsessed loner John Hinkley Jnr, he wanted to kill Reagan to get Jodie Foster's attention.  He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and Reagan recovered quickly.

    On this day in 1814, the European Alliance captured Paris, defeating Emperor Napoleon's troops.

    On this day in 1867, the U.S.A bought Alaska from the Russians for only seven point two million dollars.  Alaska's precious natural reserves have paid that debt over since then!

    On this day in 1979, Shadow Northern Ireland secretary Airey Neave, was murdered by an IRA car bomb.

    On this day in 2002, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother died.

    On this day in 1964, mods and rockers fought a pitched battle against each other at the sea side resort of Clacton upon Sea.
