The Secularisation of Christmas is also known as the War on Christmas or simply referred to as the Christmas controversy. It refers to a well-publicised controversy which surrounds the celebration of the Christmas season in public places and the role played by the media, advertising agencies, the government and various secular groups in acknowledging and highlighting the celebrations and the controversies which are associated with the festival.
The controversy is avoidable, but it tends to arise because the connotations applied to the holiday are generally associated with Christianity, which (according to the supporters of the issue) is a specific sectarian religion.
Since the citizens of countries such as the United States of America and Canada belong to different faiths, it is suggested that Christmas be replaced with a non-denominational term such as winter or holiday.
