No, latex paint is fine. If you don't like to brick finish you could just skimcoat the whole fireplace and apply any faux finish.

After properly cleaning the bricks you shouldn't have any trouble painting your fireplace. A primer made specifically for masonry will make your paint go on smoother. Just make sure to use a high quality latex interior paint.
