The reason for a dog to put on weight is more or less the same as those applicable to human being. The main reasons could be overeating or over feeding of nutritious supplement and exceedingly calorie rich foods, imbalance between food intake and exercise or continuity of the same diet even after full growth potential has been achieved.
The first fat deposits occur in dog on the ribs and waist and are difficult to notice by the owners at onset. The owner thus does not think of rectifying the diet of potentially obese dog's diet.
It is advisable to monitor the body fat status by Body Condition Score or BCS. It is a calculation which leads you to a number through which you get an insight into fat accumulated in your pet's body.
In the opinion of veterinarians an obese dog is likely to be face health hazards at some future date.
Once the dog has achieved its full growth potential consult a vet to recalculate the diet chart. In spite of diet control full nutritional needs are to be met otherwise the dog may become thin or fat, showing problems like dry skin, coat problem etc.
