The additional wire is more than likely service some other device such as an additional light fixture or an outlet near by. If you have connected a total of six wires & still have on left over, check around either switch for another fixture or outlet. If you have on that is not working you will need to connect the black wire to the constant power supply on the switch. This is general on the black or common terminal on the switch. Next time you change out an electrical device do it one terminal at a time. Also be sure all your terminal screws & connections are tight. Loose connections cause fires.
