How Did The British Get Control Of United States And India?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

British came to India as trade merchants under the banner of East India Company. Later this Company gained grounds and established their footing in many cities of India by taking advantage of incapability and disunity of native rulers.
At some places they had to face threats from other foreign nations especially French but they were able to defeat them, due to superiority in administration, munitions and naval facilities. They made lots of money by trading in and out of India. Moreover, there were corruptions at higher level in the company. The locals made one final attempt against them in the form of War of Mutiny 1857 but ended in vain. The Company was successful to suppress the mutiny, but failed to convince the British Royal Crown and was abandoned for charges against corruption. In this way India became a British colony.
Similarly, the British and the French were two main rival powers in Europe and nearby areas. Their rivalry continued when the 'seven years war' started in Europe in 1756.
The French tried to gain an upper hand by capturing Fort Oswego, the main British Trading Centre in Great Lake, but failed to sustain it. It was recaptured by the British and continued their advancement to Fort Duquesne (later Pittsburgh). By 1763, the American Colonies came under the British Rule.

The British won control of the United States and India, according to some, by being greedier than the Spanish and the French; and the Portuguese and the Dutch as well for that matter. But they were also far shrewder than the French; thinking at least a hundred years ahead of everyone else.

In America, as in India, the British encountered a society that was divided and fragile. The Native Americans were divided on tribal lines and was easy to play one side against the other. In addition to this the natives were exposed to diseases that they had never encountered which, according to some, were deliberately spread by the Europeans. India on the other hand was divided on the lines of caste and religion. In the stronghold of the Red Fort of Agra there is this massive door that the British claimed was from a Hindu Shrine. They mastered the use of propaganda to the maximum.
