Milan Kundera was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia in 1924. He was an author who was part of the generation that witnessed the Soviet tanks entered Prague. He criticised the Soviet forces openly and as a result his books were forcibly removed from Czechoslovakian libraries, and he was forced into exile, choosing to reside in France.

Milan Kundera first novel "The Joke" was published in 196. He continued to write, extending his works to plays, essays and poetry and achieved international success in 1984 with "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" which is an erotically charged story of two lovers whose relationship falls apart due their own egocentric viewpoints. He has written several novels since which have been translated into over 11 languages.

In 1985 Milan Kundera received the Jerusalem Prize, and in 2000 he received the Herder Prize. Milan Kundera became a French citizen when the Czech government revoked his citizenship. His work was reinstated in Czech libraries in 1989 after the 'Velvet Revolution'.
