What Is A Personal Loan?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Google lists at least nine definitions of what a personal loan is, and what they highlight is that which differentiates a personal loan from other types of loan.

At its most basic level, a personal loan is an act of faith and trust in the borrower by the lender. What the lender - either a bank or  other financial institution - is effectively saying is, "Here's the money, I know you'll pay it back like we agreed."

Now, for banks and other lending bodies, this is a statement that doesn't readily pass their lips without some serious forethought concerning the risk of non-payment. For, unlike a secured loan where the lender has a legally-binding claim over the borrower's assets, a personal loan is extended without there being a specific and clearly-stated interest in the borrower's wordly goods.

But there are drawbacks to this tacit expression of faith in the borrower. Usually a personal or unsecured loan will attract a significantly higher rate of interest than a secured loan. The length of time borrowers have to repay will also be much shorter and the maximum personal loan is around £20,000 - £50,000.
