Combinatorics is the science through which different types of objects are combined by employing various rules in order to recreate a new array of objects. The objects may be of any sort of things – it may be any geometrical diagram to vegetables. The combinatorics focuses on making certain arrangements of objects in question, the number of arrangements made, and to identify the best combination of objects.

Combinatorics can be sub-categorised under to sub-headings –

    • Enumeration – It refers to the study of counting and rearranging objects by employing a set of rules known as equivalence relations. Say, for example, a CD consists of three songs (1, 2, 3) altogether, that means the songs can be arranged to listen following 6 orders such as 123, 321, 132, 312, 231, and 213. But if the CD consists of 10 or more songs in it, it is hard to specify it manually. Combinatorics suggests the formulation by employing methods for generic cases.

    • Graph theory – This refers to the study on the basis of the interconnectivity among a set of objects. Graph theory primarily comprises of two factors – points or vertices and edges.

Combinatorics has become significantly valuable in recent decades especially in the study of computer science, statistics and cryptology.
