Monkeys are very common in the forests of Southeast Asia. Only one ape species is found there: the "old man of the jungle," the severely endangered orangutan.
Reserves in Indonesia and Northern Sumatra have been established to protect orangs from hunting for meat and the pet trade, resulting in a healthy population increase.
There are nine species of gibbons in the region. They are uniquely adapted to the forest canopy, swinging between branches, and thus are rarely seen on the ground.
Leaf monkeys are the most commonly seen species. The small monkey has a very long tail and silky fur of many different colors, depending on the subspecies. Females are often seen carrying infants on their backs or stomachs.
The proboscis monkey is found only on Borneo. They have long pendulous noses that may help them regulate body heat or act as a snorkel for swimming.
Macaques are large, baboon-like monkeys with fierce canine teeth. They spend more time on the ground than leaf monkeys, catching birds and mammals -- and raiding crops and garbage cans. Pig-tailed macaques have short tails curling up over their backs, and crab-eating macaques are found in coastal or island areas.
