Monitors for most desktop systems project images on large picture tube elements similar to those inside standard TV sets. This type of monitors s commonly called a CRT (cathode rays tube) display CRT technology is relatively mature, and over the years, CRTs have become very inexpensive and have gained capabilities for excellent colour output. These features notwithstanding. CRTs are bulky and fragile, and they consume a great deal of power. Another class of display devices form images by manipulating charged chemicals or gases sandwiched between panes of glass instead of firing a bulky electronic gun. These much slimmer alternatives to CRTs are called flat-panel displays. Flat panel displays take up little space ,are lightweight and require less power than CRT monitors. Because of these features they are commonly found on notebook computers and in a variety of other products. Most flat panel displays on ordinary computer systems use liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. LCD displays light up charged liquid crystals, and special colour filters manipulate this light to paint the screen. Until recently , LCD screens for desktop computers have been too costly compared to CRts. The price gap is getting smaller, however, and it is largely expected that LCDs will overtake CRTs on the desktop in the not-too-distant future. In addition to the size and portability, advantages already named, desktop LCDs provide a sharper picture than CRTs and emit less radiation.
