The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems follow the same nerve pathways, except they use different neuro-transmitters across nerve synapses. These two branches of the nervous system have different effects on bodily organs and functions. The sympathetic nervous system is associated with the fight or flight response, and often used in times of stress, whereas the parasympathetic is the one used in times of calm, or peace.
