The Attorney General of India is appointed by the President of India. The role of the Attorney General of India is to give legal advice to the government and also advise the President on legal matters. The current Attorney General of India is Milon Bannerji. He was already the Attorney General, and has been granted an extension on his term for two more years. His appointment comes into effect from 5 June, 2007. Mr. Bannerji is a senior lawyer who had been earlier appointed to the top position in 2004 for a three-year term.

Milon Bannerji has had a long and illustrious career. This is not the first time he was appointed the Attorney General of India. The 78 year old senior lawyer was also the Attorney General between November 1992 and July 1996. He was the Additional Solicitor General of India in 1979, and subsequently served as the Solicitor General of India between 1986 and 1989.
