Is It Harmful To Sit Next To A Person Who Smokes 3 Packs Of Cigarettes A Day?

I sit next to someone who smokes 3 packs of cigarettes a day. When he returns to the office, the smoky smell billows off of him making it difficult to breathe. At times, I have to leave the office and get fresh air. I know I can't ask him to stop smoking but if it is harmful for my health, can a person be asked to leave or quit smoking?

    Hi d,

I am a reformed smoker, having quit cold turkey 17 years ago.  I was a bad smoker (hated the smell and mess it made) and am an even worse non-smoker!

You can complain but the boss might not be able to do anything about it.

I don't know about this one because they make these darned buildings so hard to get air into these days, but do you sit near a window or door that opens?  If so, why not open it for a while when he returns, regardless of the weather -- hot, cold, rain, snow?

Not anticipating any assistance is best for now, and if the boss is able to help, YIPPEE!!!!!

I suggest that you plan your breaks for when this co-worker returns from his and taking your lunch after he returns from his.

Have you checked out the American Lung Association's web site for ideas?  I'd try that.

Please accept my sympathies.  Good luck with this unfortunate situation,

    Jo

it is quite harmful to be exposed to 2nd hand smoke all the time. my dear great-aunt lived all her adult life with a husband and 2 sons who smoked like a factory chimney! She died last year with all kinds of lung disease caused by her exposure to all that smoke!

I am SO sorry to hear you lost your beloved aunt this way. While I know that it's true that second-hand smoke is bad for you, there are just times when there is nothing we can do about the situation.

My husband still smokes but as soon as I quit he relegated himself to the "smoking lounge", our back patio, no matter what the weather. LOL

Take good care and the best of luck with your co-worker.

    Your friend,

    Jo

Most definitely! It is even more harmful for the second hand than it is for the person who is smoking! Put it like this, they have a filter...u don't! If you work with him, talk to your manager or supervisor and try to solve this dilemma...hope this helps improve your situation.

If your co-worker is doing it outside and not in the office, you really have no right to say anything. Its his right to smoke & as long as he respects the rules of the office, you will have to learn to deal with it. Try to keep your distance when he re-enters the office. No offence, sounds to me like your just finding excuses to complain because smoking offends you.

I have nothing against smokers in general. There are 4 other chain smokers who work with me and they don't smell half as bad as this one does. So, apparently I am not just finding excuses to complain. Every other person in this office feels the same way about him--even the smokers!! Could be his brand?

I am sorry if I sounded harsh with my answer & that is a good possibility (his brand). If that is the case, you could always throw subtle hints or like I stated before, learn to deal with it.
