My Cat Is/was In Labor. The 1st One Was Dead. It's Been 6 Hours. Should I Be Worried?

My cat Xena went into Labor at 8am this morning. She delivered one cat, and it was dead. Fully developed. And now it's been over 6 1/2 hours, and no more kittens. We know she has more to give birth to. Should we be worried?

I am completely broke here.. or I would. And the only one in our town is only in on tues. and wed... the animal hospitals are a far drive. And we do not have the gas money. We need every penny to make it to work after the bills... I know, that sounds bad. But, we never intended for our cat to get outside. And yes, we should have gotten her fixed, (before I have the ugly comments here, like some others I have read). I just went to check on her, she is in the basement.. she still has secretion, and swelling. Nothing looks stuck. I am worried that she could die too, after everything I have read here. I think I will make some phone calls and see what i can do. Thanks.

Your cat is in serious trouble.  A one cat litter is very unusual and 6.5 hours is too long between kittens.  Your mother cat is in life threatening danger.  Contact your local shelters and any rescue groups in the area for help.  In some cities there are income based clinics that may be a good option.  Ask the clinics about payments plans or Care Credit (this is a veterinary credit card).  Some clinics have an angel fund or will sign the cat over to the clinic then they will provide appropriate care and adopt the cat out.  There are options available.
The first thing that needs to be done is an x-ray to determine how many (if any) kittens are remaining.  You may be lucky and she could have just had one kitten.  The x-ray will let us know the next step.
If your cat needs surgery have them spay her at the same time to avoid this in the future.  If she is fine have her spayed in a few weeks once she is recovered from the birth.  There are low cost spay/neuter clinics available at shelters.  If you cannot afford a C-section then you need to spay her for her own safety.
      Good luck.

Thank you. .. She has not had any more and she is not in good shape... This is not good. I found her in the litter box this morning, and she will not come upstairs or anything. No food or drink in over 24hrs. She is limp, and didn't care that I picked her up from the litter box. She is resting comfortably, and I did manage to get water around her mouth, and rubbed it on the side of her teeth... she wanted nothing to do with the water. Her hind end is a mess... that's all I'm going to say about that. Hubby is home today so hopefully he and I can get her somewhere. The kids, my teenage daughter is very attached to her, and I don't want her to freak out with the cat now. I know what will probably happen to her now if she does not get medical attention. I have to find a way to help her. Thank you for your advice.
