The Ilyushin Il-62 aircraft model was designed in the former Soviet Union in 1960 and was popular among airlines in non-western countries, especially for long-haul routes. These aircraft can transport up to 198 passengers. This model, however, was discontinued in 1994, but a handful of airlines in Eastern Europe, Africa, Central Asia, Latin America and the Far East still operate Ilyushin Il-62 planes.
In total, up to 88 Il-62 aircraft are believed to still be in service, and some of these are more than forty years old. North Korea's somewhat eccentric national airline, Air Koryo, is one of the main operators of the oldest Il-62 models, with four planes still in service, and used on routes betwen Pyongyang and Beijing. TAAG Angola Airlines operates four of these planes as well, while Uzbekistan Airways had up to five in service until 2006, but retired them in March 2007. Kazakhstan-based Air Kokshetau still flies three Il-62 aeroplanes, as does Russia's Interavia Airlines.
Cuba's "Cubana" flew up to 10 Il-62 aircraft, although these include newer, more up-to-date models.
