Where Is Colombo?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Colombo is the business capital and largest city of Sri Lanka. Colombo has one of the largest harbors in the world and was known to the Romans, Arabs and Chinese traders for more than 2000 years ago.  Colombo is situated on the western coast of the island of Ceylon, adjacent to the present administrative capital of Sri Lanka - Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.

The name of the city of Colombo has been derived from the Sinhalese name 'Kola-amba-thota,' which literally means "harbor with many leafy mango trees". It was modified to Colombo by the Portuguese to honor Christopher Columbus.

The city of Colombo today is a vibrant and busy city, full of buzz, forming a perfect blend of modern life and colonial ruins.
