Number and location: The gearshift lever (stick-shift) may be located on the steering column (column shift) or on the floor (four-on-the-floor).The standard transmission has at least three speeds forward and one for backing. These positions along with neutral form an "H" pattern which is common to all manual transmission cars. Many smaller gear¬shift cars have four or five speeds forward.
Neutral Position: You can tell where neutral is because it is the only position that allows the lever to be moved sideways or back and forth for a short distance. The car is out of gear in neutral. Therefore, it allows the motor to run when the car is stopped. Neutral should be used for starting the car. Don't park and leave the car in neutral.
Reverse Gear: Reverse (R) has maximum power and should be used for backing the car at speeds less than 15 mph. is sure the car is stopped before shifting to "R". First Gear or Low Gear: Always use first gear for moving the car from a stopped position and for speed up to 10-15 mph it may also be used for heavy pulling up steep hills, in mud or sand, and in deep snow. Most owners' manuals suggest a top speed of 35 mph. Second Gear: Second has moderate power and is used mainly for increasing the speed (15-25 mph) and momentum of the car for higher gears. It is a good gear for driving in heavy traffic. Third Gear: Third is used for normal driving or speeds 25 mph and up. Fourth Gear: Fourth is a low-powered gear for speeds above35 mph and for saving fuel. It may be called overdrive.
