I consider it work.  Yard work.  It would be a chore, which for us it is.  I think if all my kids were older then maybe it would be considered a hobby, if I was actually good at it, then I would maybe consider it calming.  I don't like yard work.  In the spring time it is ok, exciting actually.  Everything is green, flowers are blooming, you can plant a garden etc.  Then in the summer like now, its too hot, everything turns to weeds, the lawn dies here in Idaho no matter how much you water it.  Also, the fruit trees get hit by worms and bugs.  I cant afford to spray every year.  You have to mow the lawn in the heat.  Even in the early morning or late night here it is way too hot to be out.  I love Spring though.  Autumn you have to deal with leaves.  They keep falling no matter if you just picked them all up.  So, I just let them go.  It is pretty and calming to see the leaves and everything change, and the temps to go down.  That is what I think about yard WORK!

i use my mower and blow the leaves up around the trees and bushes using it (the leaves)like free mulch helps keep the weeds down around the trees. the reason i asked this question is i have been outside the last three or four days edging the sidewalks and trimming up the trees and bushes. I'm trying to make the yard around the house (up against) the house maintenance free so i don't have to mess with it anymore.

Good luck making it maintenance free. Mowing and edging is a given. best you can do is plant trees to limit the sun and reduce the growth of the yard
