You would start out as a helper or maybe a laborer, but the best way to go is to become an apprentice. after your 4 year apprenticeship you become a journeyman and get full pay and benefits. I am speaking of course about a union position now.
As for the different types of Carpenter you basically have two groups that all carpenters fall under rough and finish.
The rough or structural carpenter does the framing and exterior trim of a structure, while the finish carpenter does all the interior trim and hangs the cabinets.

But there are many variation of the trade that specialize for example Roofers, floor layers, sheetrockers, sidewalks, cabinet makers and Millmen, and form carpenters.

If your serious about getting on as a carpenter start as a helper as there's no substitute for experience or contact your local IBC union hall and find out when they are accepting applications for apprenticeships, you will be tested so prepare yourself by reading up on the fundamentals. Expect to work hard and not always in your chosen area. Then there's the off season where it is hard to find work at all.

I been a finish carpenter and cabinet maker for 26 years and have gone back to school to learn a new trade as you'll find out it doesn't get easier with age.

I hope this has helped you and good luck in your life journey,
