The reason mars looks red is because of its soil contains a lot of iron oxides, whereas the earth looks blue because of its oceans and the glow of its atmosphere. In relation to closer planets the colour depends on things like their atmosphere, or the gas which makes them up. Things like stars and more distant objects colour depends on the direction they are moving. If they look blue it means they are moving towards the earth, whereas if they look red it means they are moving away from the earth. This is called the red shift and is the main evidence for the big bang.
