What Does Modem Stands For?

Answer Question

It's interesting that you would ask, as so many people don't, and especially since so many people accept the term 'cable modem' or 'DSL modem', when these devices are not modems.

Modem is short for MOdulate/DEModulate, and indicates a device that modulates and demodulates digital signals into 'audio' pulses for transmission across phone lines (which at the time were not designed to carry digital signal). The modem was the device that made those tones and made all the noise when a person would connect to the internet. The sounds are the modem modulating the connection signal from the computer to the analog signal needed to send and receive data across the analog phone lines.

I hope I've helped in some small way, and you have a great day.
