Liaqat Ali khan was the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. He visited America in 1950. He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Kansas City. Speaking on that occasion he introduced the newly born country of Pakistan to American people.Liaqat Ali Khan told them that one hundred million Muslims and three hundred Hindus lived in the sub-continent India.

They were different from each other in their religious beliefs and cultural traditions. The two nations also had different social and economic ideals. The Muslims worshiped one God and Hindus worshipped many gods. The Muslims believed in equality of men but the Hindus believed in a caste system.

The Muslims feared that after the departure of the British rulers from India, they would live as a permanent political minority in the country. They thought that the big majority of Hindus would always rule the country. So, the Muslims demanded a separate homeland for them where they could live according to their own ideology and social tradition.

They believed that without getting a homeland of their own freedom would mean would mean only change of masters for them. They also feared that under the Hindu domination they might be totally crushed economically and culturally. It was for these reasons that Muslims struggle very hard to get a free homeland. Finally the Muslims of India succeeded in getting a new and free homeland called Pakistan on 14th August 1947.
