When Was The Last Sighting Of The Tasmanian Wolf?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Tasmanian Wolf was an animal that was found only in Tasmania. It was hunted fiercely during the late 19th century and its numbers went down until there were only a few hundred animals left.

The Tasmanian Wolf looked a bit like a small wolf in shape but it had stripes like a tiger. It was actually not related to either the wolf or the tiger, but was a relative of the kangaroo and the wallaby. It was a marsupial rather than a mammal, and had a pouch for its young; these were born live and would crawl to the pouch to complete their development.

A mystery disease struck the Tasmanian Wolf at the beginning of the twentieth century and their numbers fell to dangerously low levels. The last known Tasmanian wolf died in captivity in 1936. Although there have been unconfirmed reports of people thinking they have seen one, this is when the last Tasmanian wolf was definitely sighted.
