In fishing, a gaff basically is a stick with a hook attached on its end which is used to stab a big fish and later elevate the fish into the boat. Preferably, the hook is positioned beneath the backbone.
Gaffs are applied when the weight of the fish goes beyond the breaking point of the fishing line or pole. They cannot be used if you want to let go the fish unhurt after capture. Fishing basically is the act of hunting for fish. This can be done by various methods like hooking, trapping, etc.
Fishing has been a very old and worldwide practice with many old methods being changed by contemporary hi-tech developments. Contemporary fishing has become both a recreational as well as a professional sport.
