Caux is a place in Normandy which occupies the bigger part of the French département of Seine Maritime in the Haute-Normandie region. Physically speaking it is a chalk plateau which lies to the north of the Seine Estuary and extends the entire way to the cliffs of the English Channel. It also has the Pays de Bray o one side. The name Caux comes from the physical features of the place. In the Normandian dialect it means 'lime' or 'calcium carbonate'. The same word in French translated to 'chaux' which means chalk. The language spoken here is Cauchois, one of the Normandian dialects. Some of the main towns in Cauz are Dieppe, Étretat and Fécamp and the main occupations in this region are fishing, weaving and others that the plateau can support.
