Why Is The Pacific Ocean So Called?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Pacific Ocean gets its name from the Latin name Mare Pacificum, which means "peaceful sea", given to it by Portuguese voyager Ferdinand Magellan. The Pacific Ocean is said to be the biggest body of water on earth.

The Ocean covers a third of the Earth's surface, having a total area of 179.7 million square kilometres drastically bigger than Earth's complete landmass, with space for another Africa to standby. Stretching roughly 15,500 kilometres from the Bering Sea in the Artic region to the icy borders of Antarctica's Ross Sea in the south, the Pacific achieves its maximum east-west girth at about 5 degrees north latitude, where it extends to about 19,800 kilometres.

The Pacific comprises of about 25,000 islands, most of which are located towards the south of the equator.
