Strictly speaking, a tomato is a berry, but definitely a fruit rather than a vegetable

Vegetable is a culinary (cooking) term. It is used to describe something savoury that goes well with dinners and that sort of thing. As a tomato fits this description, it is a vegetable.
Fruit is a biology term. A fruit is the fleshy part of the plant containing seeds, such as a tomato. Other plant foods we eat include carrots (roots), lettuce (leaves), strawberries (accessory fruits, and I'm not quite sure what these are. Did you know that they are not actually berries, because they don't grow in clusters like grapes etc? And bananas, because of this reason, are berries!), sunflower seeds (seeds), and peanuts (I think these are seeds, but don't count on it).
