    Azerbaijan formally known as the Republic of Azerbaijan basically is a country situated in the Caucasus district of Eurasia.

    Positioned at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, Azerbaijan shares its borders with the Caspian Sea towards the east, with Russia towards the north, with Georgia towards the northwest, with Armenia towards the west and with Iran towards the South. Azerbaijan is said to be a secular country, and has been part of the Council of Europe from the year 2001. Nearly 70 per cent of the population of Azerbaijan is Shi'a Muslim; where as the remaining 30 per cent are Sunni Muslims.  

    According to the census conducted in the year 1999, the total population of this country was estimated to be 7,953,438, having an average population density of 97 per square kilometre. The census report of 1999 also stated that the total area of this region was 86,600 square kilometres.
