What Are Some Good Mountain Bikes?
My boyfriend is looking to buy a mountain bike that will be good for riding dirt and rock trails and doing dirt jumps. He's looked at Iron Horse and wants to know if they are any good. What are some other good bikes?

I have an old Nishiki, it is excellent for trails, rocks and dirt. I haven't tried extensive jumping other than the normal trail wear and tear but it has lasted me for at least five good years of riding. The bike was my father's before mine, he kept is in the garage for years and then we put new tires and chains and all that fancy stuff on and I was ready to go.

It depends on the budget. Iron Horse, Jamis, Specialized and Kona (among others) build nice hardtails (bikes with only front suspension) around 300 to 600 bucks.
If he wants full suspension he would enter the above 1,000 bucks realm.

CHEAP, with good dampered shocks and fairly light weight is the Mongoose XR 250! At around $150!

Um... This is sooooo wrong, lol. A mongoose at that price is a wal-mart bike. It is not light weight at all, seeing as it weighs like 45 lbs. The shocks are made from crappy steel springs with no oil or air damping. CHEAP sums up the whole bike.
Iron Horse is the only way to go !!!

I would say Mongooses are the best bikes because they have really good tires and really good shocks.

Bear in mind if you are on a budget that a full suspension bike of the same price as a hardtail bike will usually have inferior components, the shock and frame are more costly and heavier than an equivalently priced hardtail and so it really depends on your budget, obviously different solutions are better suited to different uses also.
