Are Animals Ever Homosexual?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

    Basically, yes.

    Some examples:

A pair of male chinstrap penguins at New York's Central Park zoo choosing to bond and display all the usual mating bonds and rituals, while ignoring potential female mates.

Some female Japanese macaques in Kyoto zoo observed to prefer to sexually interact with each other, mostly ignoring males and they may even miss fertile opportunities to mate with males and get pregnant.

Literally hundreds of species, including mammals, fish, insects and fish, have been observed to practice preferential same-sex pairing.

The real question is why are some animals gay?

Are they confused?  Do they do it for social dominance?  Does it resolve social conflicts?  Is it a 'faulty' gene (compared to cystic fibrosis on some anti-gay websites)?  For a long time animal behaviourists assumed it was simply 'confusion', which has delayed research, but for the moment, it looks like the animals simply enjoy it.
