A colt is the term used to refer to a young male horse from birth until it is less than four years of age. In fact, in thoroughbred horse racing, a colt is the name given to a male horse that is less than five years of age, whereas in harness racing, it is a male horse less than four years of age. Once the horse crosses that age, it is simply called a Horse, or in case of harness racing, an aged horse.
If to be explained giving the horse a human form, it can be said that the horse, until his fourth birthday, is called a Colt. As soon as he completes his fourth birthday, he starts being called a Horse.
The female equivalent of a colt is a filly, and a mare thereafter. Male foals are termed as colt foals. A group of colts is called a rag.
