Is A Hearing Aid The Only Way To Help Hearing Impairment?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

In brief the answer is no. The hearing aid is for people who are suffering from deafness or hearing loss. However, hearing impairment can refer to when a person's hearing is affected by various sound frequencies. Hearing aids amplify sound frequencies rather than compensating for them and so can make the condition worse.

Cochlea implants can also aid hearing impairment. They are electronic devices that are implanted in the inner ear to amplify sound perception. This method seems to particularly help those who have become hearing impaired in adulthood.

Radio aids are another method that can be used. They consist of a microphone and transmitter worn by the speaker and a receiver worn by the listener. This is a popular method used in inclusive learning classrooms with hearing impaired children. The signal is tuned in to the required frequency so that the listener can receive the information at a distance up to 100 metres. It is designed to filter out any background noise.

An induction loop system is also used in classrooms so that teachers can communicate with hearing impaired children. The teacher wears a microphone which emits amplified signals that travel along a wire loop that is fitted around the classroom. However, this method does not assist the child with communicating with their peers and is limited to the classroom only.

This is a good answer however, I wish you people stop saying we deafies "suffer" from hearing loss. Could you say it with that! It is offensive! I have been deaf all my life and I wear hearing aids. I make good use of them and took speech and language therapy until I reach high school. I don't see myself as a person who suffers, I just see myself a person who can achieve the best anyone can! There is wonderful Deaf community out there with its own culture rich environment. American Sign Language is being learned by everyone!

I agree with Maggie Kay!  I am hearing impaired or as I like to say, one that hears only what SHE wants to hear.  LOL.  I don't feel that I SUFFER from being hearing impaired at all.  There were and still are some obstacles that I have overcome but I don't put myself in a class by itself.  I'm still a person who knows what she wants and like everybody else must work hard to achieve it.  The only thing I do hate is where children who are deaf or hearing impaired could read something like we suffer from it and could lower their self esteem.  I should know because as a child I heard it a lot and I didn't like that.  My strong foundation was my family who kept me going.  Mind you, GS Girl, I know it wasn't your intention to offend but just clarifying that you could have just said that a hearing aid is for people WHO HAS a deafness or hearing loss...

Appears the term "suffering" seems to be offensive. If someone said that about me, I'd consider it showing consideration. I have always had good hearing but as I age, my hearing is suffering. It's too bad so many suffer a chip on their shoulders when people are trying to be considerate. Come on!
