Fred Gastoff invented the first cheer leader's paper pom poms in America in the year 1965. Cheer leading is accepted as an athletic discipline and it has also become a competition. Up to 210 squads compete in the international cheerleading championships.

Nowadays the majority of cheerleaders are women but in the earlier days, men performed the task. There is much to talk about the history of cheer leaders since its inception in the year 1860's when students in Britain began cheering at the sports events. From there the idea was extended to United States which became a massive hit there. The first pom poms were made out of paper in the 1930's.
