I have known Muslim women who freely show their hair and live a free and happy life combining their religion with a 'normal' western lifestyle.
You can't be doing anything wrong by keeping your inner faith and enjoying life too.
A woman's hair is a lovely thing and too lovely to be hidden.
You sound like a lovely person and it would be a shame if you hid all that personality away instead of sharing it with the world.
There's nothing in Islam that dictates that you should wear the hijab. I think that was made up by men to hide their women and became part of the tradition of some followers of Islam but by no means all. In fact in some Islamic countries the hijab is being banned as women go out into the world and express themselves.
It's difficult for me as a very liberated woman to know how you feel but I admire you and hope you free yourself from your fear that you would be wrong to express yourself in your own way. I'm sure if you decide not to wear the hijab you'll meet lots of new friends and open up a whole new world whilst still being a good Muslim in your heart and you'll be doing nothing harmful and horrendous - quite the opposite you'll be contributing a lot to society and the world.
Good Luck

I am not a Muslim so you might not think that I can tell you much about this, but I can tell you that I have often worked with Muslim women from different countries - some Muslim, others not - and many of them had never worn the hijab or any other form of head covering in their lives; because it was not the custom where they lived, and they simply didn't think it was central to Islam.
As far as I have been able to discover, the Quran doesn't command women to wear the veil but only recommends it in certain cases. It is also true that the covering of women's heads is not just an Islamic practice but has been carried out in many countries throughout history. For example, when I lived in Orthodox Christian Greece in the 1980s, many rural woman still never went out without their headscarves; and I'm pretty sure such dress codes existed long before either either Christianity or Islam.
You sound like an intelligent, lively and conscientious person who has much to offer any community, religious or secular. I hope you come to a decision which allows you to enjoy harmless freedoms without sacrificing important values. Good luck.

Please, every body, don't talk in the name of islam until you be certain about what you are saying. The hijab on the women is clearly identified in the qur'an and in the hadith and as we know we must follow the both of qur'an and sunnah "hadith" because we have been ordered to obey the both. for example we all know that al-asr prayer is a four rak'as prayer and we must do so and in the same time you will not find a verse in qur'an says al-asr is a four rak'as prayer but the sunnah tells us. So both the qur'an and the sunnah are sources of the islamic law "shari'aa" and we can find clearly in the sunnah when the prophet ordered his wifes and the muslims women clearly to wear hijab
Wearing a hijab is not at all a compulsion in Islam. Hijab was started as a fashion in the middle east in the medieval ages.
You can show your hair and still have dignity. The holy Koran does not stop you from that.

dear sister do not take into consideration what others are telling you, it is clearly stated in the quran and hadith that it is forbidden for woman to show themselves except their face, hands and feet below their ankle. may Allah guide you.

That's a good answer for someone who doesn't care about Islam. But i do and i know what happens if i go out and drink, don't pray, show my hair. I cant just do whatever i want and expect to go to a great place in heaven when i die. It's like anything in this life, you don't get something for nothing. This life maybe for me 70 to 80 years god willing. But the afterlife is forever.
