Shillong, the capital of the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya, is nicknamed the 'Scotland if the East'. It is also the district headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. According to the 2001 population census, the population of Shillong has been estimated to be approximately 260, 000. Shillong is located at an altitude of about 4, 908 feet, or about 1, 496 metres about sea level.

Shillong, according to a local legend, derives its name from Leishyllong, a supreme deity who is believed to be residing on Shillong Peak, which is located at an altitude of about 1, 965 metres above sea level. Shillong Peak overlooks the city and is the highest point in the state of Meghalaya. Shillong was originally called Iewduh, but to avoid confusion between its name (Iewduh) and that of the original name of Japan's capital, Tokyo, which was called Ido in the 19th century, the British decided to change the name of Iewduh and it was renamed as Shillong.
