A man kept two dogs. One was a pet; this animal slept on his bed, sat in his lap and was fed on choice food. The other was a hound, a working animal. This dog had to obey the man, help him catch rabbits – which it never got a chance to eat – and sleep outside in a kennel, where it guarded the house. The hound complained to the house dog that this was unfair. "I know," said the pet, "but what can I do? I can't tell our master how to treat us."
The moral of this very brief fable is that children are not to blame for the unfair treatment and favouritism of their parents. It compares interestingly with similar fables like "the donkey and the lapdog" where the donkey is ridiculed for trying to be treated like a pet. Here, the message seems to be just that some things are unfair, and you shouldn't blame either yourself or those who are luckier than you.
