Will I Be Able To Play PS2 Games On 80GB PS3?

Answer Question

Ok... The real question here is how old an 80Gb system do you have? The older ones (the ones released when the PS3 first came out) are reverse compatible to an extent (allowing you to play some PS2 games on your PS3), but even they don't allow you to play ALL of your PS2 games... For a while there, Sony was working to make as many of them compatible as possible, but in the end, they decided that it was simply too expensive to continue to attempt to make the PS3 compatible with the last-gen software, and so the attempt (and on-going efforts) were abandoned.

If the system you have (or are thinking of buying) is an 80gb system, but is brand new (or quite close to being new), then you will not be able to play your old PS2 games on it. Quite simply, you are better off just keeping a PS2 in good shape, and not buying a PS3 until you can afford to buy yourself a decent selection of PS3 games to go with it, and keep your PS2 for playing your old games. There are many companies that provide RF switch-boxes to allow you to switch between game systems, but you need to be aware that not all of them allow you to use the HD output your PS3 is capable of, so if you have an HD compatible television, be sure the switch box is designed to allow HD signal throughput... Otherwise you may simply be better off routing it through a vcr, or if the television allows it, simply connect them independently to the tv, and using your instruction manual, learn how to switch between the signals (which will likely be on different 'input source' settings)...

I hope I've been of some help, and that you figure out how to play all your favorite games, as well as getting and enjoying the new games available in true High-Def from the PS3...

If you get a new one in walmart, best buy, or target then it won't be able to play ps2 games.
