When Was The Most Recent Plane Crash In Russia And Are They Common Occurrences?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The most recent Russian airplane crash occurred on 17 March 2007 in Samara, a city located about 900km from Moscow. The aircraft was a Tuplev 134, one the most popular aircraft types in Russia, and was operated by YUT Air. The accident occurred during an attempted emergency landing, when a thick fog hindered the pilot's visibility. Seven passengers on board YUT Air were killed, while over 20 others were transported to hospital with various injuries.

Airplane crashes have been somewhat more common in Russia than in other countries, but when looking at the number of incidents, one must also take into consideration Russia's very large commercial airline industry. Aeroflot, the country's flag carrier, for example, has one of the largest fleets in the world. Nevertheless, accidents are quite common. The last one occurred in August 2006, when a Tupolev 154, operated by a Russian airline, crashed in Ukraine. This was a more fatal accident than that of YUT Air, as all 170 passengers died in the incident.
