The "Dome of the Rock" which is located in the city of Jerusalem is the oldest known Muslim structure that has survived the ravages of time. It was built in the year 691 CE by Caliph Abd-al-Malik. The "Dome of the Rock" is a huge octagonal structure with a dome that encases a rock, which has references in both the Muslim religion and in the Jewish religion. The walls on the insides of the Dome are artfully decorated with beautiful floral images.

The Muslims believe that this was the very rock which Prophet Mohammed used to enter the kingdom of God at the end of his night journey (the Koran was reveled to Prophet Mohammed on this journey). The Jews on the other hand believe this rock to be the "foundation stone", the rock of creation of the world and also the place where Isaac the son of Abraham was bound to be offered as a sacrifice to God.
