What Causes A Bruise And How Can It Be Treated?

Answer Question

A bruise is a minor injury. The body responds by bruising if something causes an impact into the skin. The skin is not broken but the blood vessels just under the skin break open and release blood in the tissue spaces.

This makes the area look red at first but then it turns black, green, or even yellow as the clotted blood is broken down into pigments and cleared up by the body's immune system.

Bruises don't normally need very much treatment but, if the bruising is severe and is combined with tissue swelling, say around an ankle that has been badly sprained, the best treatment is cold compresses applied directly. This can be an ice pack or even a pack of frozen peas to ease the swelling and reduce the bruising.

Some people bruise much more easily than others. Bruising usually disappears by itself within two or three weeks.
