    Well, there was this little thing about the USA invading Afghanistan (1 March). You might recall hearing something about it in the news.

    This was not long after GW Bush gave his Annual State of the Union speech (29 January) where he infamously put Iraq, Iran and North Korea onto the "Axis of Evil".

    Hu Jintao became leader of China (15 November). He's still in there now (January 2007).

    Depends what else you consider to be world-worthy news. In 2002, Brazil defeated Germany to win the world cup (July) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets got released in to cinemas (November).

    And there were a lot of events building up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

      The year 2002 basically was common year and began on a Tuesday according to the Gregorian calendar. It was selected as the International Year of Ecotourism and Mountains, Years of the Outback in Australia, National Science Year in United Kingdom and also the Autism Awareness Year in the United Kingdom.

      Quiet a few major sporting events also took place in the year 2002 like the Athletics-2002 IAAF World Cup, 2002 Men's World Hockey Cup, 2002 Women's World Hockey Cup, Rugby Union-2002 Women's Rugby World cup and the biggest and most well known one being 2002 FIFA World Cup.

      The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the 17th World Cup and was held in South Korea and Japan between May 31st to June 30th. It was won by Brazil who defeated Germany in the Finals.
