Any Tips On Owning And Buying A Used Left Hand Drive Car In The UK?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are a number of major points to look out for when buying a second hand LHD vehicle.

First, ensure the vehicle has been issued with a V5 registration document and has a valid MoT certificate if applicable. Also ask from which country the vehicle has been imported and which modifications were made to it for driving in the UK. Find out, too, if the headlamps have been replaced. If not, factor in the cost of a new set of UK standard headlamps that won't need beam bias adaptors for driving on the left.

Next, ask your insurance company about cover. Some don't entertain left hand drive vehicles or will want to impose a hefty increase in your premium. Shop around for the best deal but expect to pay around 30 per cent more than the premium for an equivalent right hand drive model.

Prices will vary wildly, so seek out quotes from specialist insurers that offer cover designed for imports and left hand drive vehicles.
