How Can You Make A House Look Tidy In A Very Short Time?

You can't, not really, but there are a few tricks to make things look better than they are (if, for instance, your parents have just called to say they're on their way.) The main thing is to de-clutter. Find a cupboard with some space, grab a binbag, stuff all clothes/ books/ toys or whatever is lying around into that, and shove the lot into the cupboard. Meanwhile, open all doors and windows to air the place.

Then you look around the room for white or pale surfaces. Those are the ones that show dirt. Quickly clean them with a soft cloth, or soapy water if they are really filthy (try a small area first; sometimes cleaning makes things worse.) If you have a white telephone, kettle or whatever, clean that – these things always get grubby.

Finally, check the floor. If there's time, vacuum clean scientifically – in other words, just go for the dirty places, you haven't time to cover every inch. If you have an ironing board out, put it away – it looks depressing. If you have a nice houseplant, put it somewhere noticeable.
