They're still seen as nothing but 'savages' and the reservations are like living in a third world country in a way.  Though they have always been abused by the government, they find small ways to stick it to them (casinos, they live in tepees (which the government can't tax) and drive nice cars).  It's a shame because they were one a beautiful people with a beautiful oral history and hand made objects.  Most of the youth are spiteful of their heritage and run away from it.  It amuses me because I'm part because of my great-great grandmother and I love my heritage, but then, I grew up in an area that is quite accepting and with relatives who are proud of the heritage.  A lot of people who are full blooded, they see it as a curse in a way and they want nothing to do with it, hence why the languages of the Sioux, Blackfoot, Cherokee, and so forth will die out.
