England first appointed a foreign coach in January two thousand and one when the FA appointed Swedish national Sven Goran Eriksson as first team manager.

The appointment of the former Lazio manager was met with much resistance from the English media and former players who believed the position of England manager should have been filled by an Englishmen.

At the time the FA were in desperate need of a man to re attain the heights scaled by England in Euro ninety six when the national side under the guidance of former England coach Terry Venables, reached the semi finals of the home staged tournament.  Having tried appointing former players and fans favourites in Glenn Hoddle and Kevin Keegen, the FA believed it needed a radical change.

Under Hoddle the side crashed out of France ninety eight and Hoddle was eventually sacked for comments made to the press in a completly non football related matter.
