The equation could be written as follows:
winning candidate = x
losing candidate = y
total votes = 810
x + y = 810
x = y +220
substitute for the value of x, then you get
y + 220 + y = 810
solve the equation
2y = 810 - 220
2y = 590
y = 295
substitute y back into the equation
x + 295 = 810
x = 515
